When planning a renovation, extension or new build, it can be tempting to focus first on the visible decisions: the kitchen, flooring, finishes or furniture.
But some of the most important decisions happen much earlier.
Before walls are moved, electrical plans are fixed or building work begins, there is an opportunity to think about how you actually want your home to work – how you move through it, where you spend your time, what needs to be stored and how the different spaces should connect.
For us, this is where thoughtful interior design begins.
Working through these decisions early can help avoid compromises later and create a home that feels cohesive, considered and genuinely suited to the people living in it.
START WITH HOW YOU WANT TO LIVE
Before thinking about finishes or furniture, think about your everyday life.
Where do you naturally gather? Do you want one large open plan space, or would you prefer areas that can be closed off? Do you work from home? Entertain regularly? Need somewhere for children to do homework while dinner is being prepared?
These conversations can fundamentally change the way a floor plan should work.
When we work on full-home renovations, extensions and new builds, we look at the home as a whole: how rooms connect, the circulation between them and whether the proposed layout genuinely supports the way our clients want to live.
It is much easier to resolve these questions while plans can still evolve than once construction is underway.
FURNISH THE FLOOR PLAN
A room can look generous on an architectural drawing but behave very differently once furniture is introduced.
Before finalising layouts, we consider where key pieces will sit, how much space is needed around them and how people will move through the room.
In a living space, for example, the position of the sofa may influence the television, lighting, electrical sockets and joinery. In a bedroom, the bed affects bedside lighting, switches and storage. In an open plan kitchen, dining and living space, each zone needs to work independently while still feeling connected to the whole.
Planning furniture alongside the architecture allows these elements to work together rather than one having to adapt to the other later.
DECIDE WHAT NEEDS TO BE BUILT IN
Bespoke joinery can completely transform how a home works but it is most successful when considered as part of the architecture rather than added at the end.
Think about where you may want fitted wardrobes, media cabinetry, shelving, window seating, a home office, boot-room storage or somewhere to conceal the less attractive necessities of everyday life.
These decisions can affect wall depths, electrical points, lighting, heating and even door positions.
Considering them early gives the joinery the opportunity to feel integrated into the home and ensures the practical details required to make it work are already accounted for.
CONSIDER WHAT EACH DECISION AFFECTS NEXT
Very few decisions within a renovation exist in isolation.
Moving a wall can affect the lighting. Changing a kitchen layout can alter electrical and plumbing positions. Introducing bespoke cabinetry may change socket locations. Moving furniture can influence where pendants, wall lights and switches need to sit.
This is one of the reasons we encourage clients to think beyond individual rooms or individual selections.
Looking at the project as a whole allows us to understand the relationship between decisions and resolve them in the right order. It can also reduce the need for reactive decisions on site, when options may be more limited and changes more costly.
DESIGN FOR LIVING, NOT JUST FOR NOW
A beautifully designed home should do more than look good when it is finished. It should support everyday life for years to come.
That means considering how your needs may change, where flexibility would be useful and which decisions are worth investing in because they will be difficult to alter later.
The aim isn’t to predict every eventuality. It is to create a strong, considered foundation – one that allows the home to evolve without losing the clarity of the original design.
