The Heritage Home

A celebration of colour, character and considered contrast, this Georgian home in Harpenden called for an interior that felt as individual as the architecture itself.

Previously divided into two rooms, the original proportions were reinstated to create one generous sitting room – a beautifully expansive space designed for relaxing, entertaining and music. Thoughtful zoning brings intimacy to the scale, creating a series of distinct areas that feel connected, yet each have their own purpose.

The design evolved around the clients’ love of combining antique and contemporary pieces. Treasured furniture and artwork sit comfortably alongside new additions, allowing the room to feel collected over time rather than newly decorated. Warm, softly coloured walls provide the backdrop for an expressive layering of pattern, texture and colour, balanced by the natural warmth of oak herringbone flooring.

At the heart of the room, the original fireplace remains an important architectural anchor, complemented by an antiqued mirror that discreetly conceals the television and allows the period character of the space to take precedence. Artwork was carefully curated and repositioned throughout, while bespoke window treatments introduce pattern and beautifully frame the Georgian proportions of the windows.

Lighting adds another layer to the scheme, with ambient and task lighting creating warmth across the different areas of the room. Above it all, the sculptural chandelier forms an unexpected centrepiece – its rich colour bringing a playful note to the softer palette below.

The result is an interior that feels elegant without formality and eclectic without losing cohesion: a warm, characterful room where heritage, personality and contemporary living sit naturally together.
